Confused about the RQF and what it means for Teaching Assistant qualifications? This guide explains the Regulated Qualifications Framework, course levels, and how to choose a recognised TA qualification in the UK.
Teaching Assistant Qualifications Explained
Are you thinking about becoming a Teaching Assistant or looking to gain a recognised qualification in your current role? If so, it’s important to understand the type of courses available and which ones are officially recognised.
At The Learning College, our home study Level 2 and Level 3 Teaching Assistant courses are accredited by CACHE and are part of the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). This means they are recognised by primary and secondary schools across the UK.
Why Take a Teaching Assistant Qualification?
There are several reasons why people choose to study a Teaching Assistant course:
To start a new career in education
To gain a recognised qualification for a current school-based role
To deepen your understanding of the Teaching Assistant role
Many people find the range of available courses confusing, especially with so many offering similar titles. The key is to look for an RQF-recognised qualification to ensure it is valid and accepted by schools.
What is the RQF?
The Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) has replaced the old NVQ system. It is the official framework for education and training qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The RQF is regulated by OFQUAL (The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation), which ensures all qualifications meet national standards.
Every RQF qualification is made up of units and credits. These credits can be transferred to other courses, making it easier for you to progress onto higher levels of study if you choose. Each qualification has a level between Entry Level and Level 8, depending on the depth of study required.
Level 2 or Level 3 – Which Course Should You Choose?
There are two main levels of Teaching Assistant qualifications: Level 2 and Level 3.
Level 2 is ideal for those new to studying or returning after a long break. It is more introductory and easier to manage.
Level 3 is more detailed, takes longer to complete, and involves more in-depth assignments. It is suited to those who are already working in a school or looking to progress further in education.
Both Level 2 and Level 3 courses offered by The Learning College are RQF-registered and recognised by schools in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Are These Qualifications Recognised in Scotland?
In Scotland, local authorities typically look for:
An SVQ Level 3 in Early Years Care and Education
Or an HNC in Childcare and Education
While our courses are recognised in the rest of the UK, learners in Scotland should check with their local authority for guidance on accepted qualifications.
Do I Need to Upgrade My Existing Qualification?
If you already hold an older NVQ or NQF qualification, there is no need to retake the newer RQF versions. The RQF qualifications are based on the same standards as the NVQs, but with a more flexible structure that allows you to add new units as your role evolves.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for our Teaching Assistant courses. However, you will need to:
Be aged 16 or over
Have a good standard of English, particularly in reading and writing
