Who is the course for?

Functional Skills courses were created by the UK Government with the aim of enhancing the literacy, numeracy, and Information Communication Technology (ICT) skills of individuals in the UK. These courses, which are equivalent to achieving a GCSE grade, can assist individuals in meeting the requirements for employment and university admission that necessitate a passing grade in these subjects.

English and Maths are universally recognised as fundamental subjects, as they are crucial for comprehending all other academic disciplines. Moreover, both numeracy and literacy skills are essential for successfully navigating daily life.

Therefore, undertaking the Functional Skills English Level 1 course will enable you to develop the necessary skills and knowledge to overcome everyday challenges.

By improving your literacy skills, you will be able to effectively express your thoughts in words and communicate clearly with others, both in person and through various platforms.

Assessment

Throughout your Functional Skills English Level 1 course, your progress will be evaluated through our online skill checks and diagnostic tests. Once you achieve a level 1.5 or higher on these quizzes, you will be deemed prepared to proceed with your exams.

There are a total of 3 exams to undertaken with your Level 1 English Functional Skills of which are taken from your own location so no need to travel to any exam centre.

Please note: Exam fee ‘is’ included within your registration

You will have 12 months to complete this qualification however, it can be completed sooner as it all depends on the hours you put in each week.

1. Reading – This module focuses on developing your reading skills, specifically in gathering information and critically analysing biased pieces of work. It also explores the impact of different layout features on the reader. To assess your understanding, skill checks will be provided at the end of each section, to test your learnt knowledge.

2. Writing – In this module, you will learn the most effective techniques for writing various types of content, such as letters, newspaper articles, emails, and blogs. Additionally, your spelling, punctuation, and grammar skills will be tested. To assess your understanding, skill checks will be provided at the end of each section, to test your learnt knowledge.

3. Speaking, Listening, and Communication – The SLC component of English functional skills is highly valuable and enjoyable. This module aims to enhance your skills in speaking, listening, and communication by providing examples of how to handle everyday situations both at home and in the workplace. By practicing these scenarios, you will gain confidence and improve your effectiveness.

Once you’ve undertaken all of the skill checks and recommended learning, you will then undertake your diagnostic assessment to determine which level you are now working at. Once you are working at level 1.5 and above, you should be ready to take your final exam.

As part of your qualification you will also be able to utilise the following tools througout your study of which is all part of the Learner Platform:

- Initial assessments to see your first level at the start of qualification
- Skill check test on certain subjects
- Mock paper exams
- Diagnostic assessments to take after learning to see your progress
- Utilise the interactive learning areas
- Have targets set by your Tutor

Can I speak to anyone prior to registering onto my course?

Absolutely! We have a specialist team of course advisors that will be able to answer any questions you have. They will also enable you to understand how the study works! Can I pay by instalments?

Yes! All our course will enable you to make payment via a payment plan option. All payment plan options will cost around £50 more due to the direct debit platform costs.

Do I need to have a credit check for the instalment plan?

No, we don’t use any credit checking facility and you will not be credit checked to take advantage of our payment plan. It is a direct agreement you have with the college to enable you to make your payments easier to manage.

Can you offer me funding for my course?

Unfortunately, we don’t offer any funding for any of our courses. Instead, we have convenient payment plans to help you manage the cost monthly. Each of our payment plans are carefully crafted to keep the cost as low as possible to make them more manageable.

About Learning

Will I have a Tutor to help me with my course?

Yes, you will have a personal 1-2-1 Tutor. Upon registration you will then choose which Tutor you would like to work with, and they will then support your study throughout. You will be able to directly message your Tutor, email, call and where required, video call.

Can I complete my course quicker than the guided time?

Yes of course! Study is done in your own time at your own pace. This means you can customise and fit your study around your current commitments making completion simple. The number of hours you study each week will determine as to how quickly you complete. The more time you do, the quicker you pass your qualification!

What will I need for my studies?

You will need to have either a PC or a tablet such as the iPad or an Android to study on. For your convenience we have The Learning College app that is available for download off both the app store and google play. We will provide all information, assessments, podcast lessons (watch in your own time at your own pace) along with all answer sheets being set out ready for completion. You will also need to have some form of ‘word’ such as Microsoft word or Open Office (free software) Ask us for more details if you require advice on the free software.

When can I start my course after registering?

Upon finalising your registration via our website, you will have instant access to all course material and will be able to being your studies right away. This applies 24/7 and even at weekends you will have no delay in getting started.

Will I have to take an exam?

With the exception of our Functional Skills qualifications, you will NOT have any exams with our qualifications. Most of our qualifications are assessment based and will be marked on a unit-by-unit basis by your personal 1-2-1 tutor.

What happens if I fail an assignment?

If you fail any of your assignments, please don’t worry. Your personal tutor will generally set you an additional research task toguideyou towards the correct answer whereby you will be able to amend your original answer and re-submit. You have no limit on re-submissions either taking away any worries.

Do I need to attend any lessons?

No, all materials are online via our learner platform to enable you to study in your own time at your own pace. The materials are available 24/7 365 days a year so you will have no restrictions and plenty of time.
